Marjane Satrapi, one of the most influential voices in contemporary comics, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026. She was an author, filmmaker, and painter who leaves behind a legacy deeply marked by political activism, social criticism, and the defense of human rights.

She gained international recognition in the early 2000s with Persepolis, her celebrated autobiographical graphic novel in which she recounts her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and the subsequent repression, particularly against women. Divided into four volumes, the work was also published in a complete edition and adapted to cinemas in 2007. The acclaimed animated film further solidified the global impact of her work.

Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and Ajdar are other works by the late author, who was born on November 22, 1969, in Rasht, Iran, into a wealthy family with progressive views. Due to the complicated political situation in her country, for which she always advocated freedom, she moved to Vienna to complete her secondary education. After returning to Iran, she earned a Master's degree in visual communication from the University of Tehran after enrolling in the Fine Arts program. In 1994, she moved to Strasbourg to study decorative arts before settling in Paris. Exiled in France since the mid-1990s, she became a naturalized French citizen in 2006. She has also illustrated children's books for publishers such as Nathan and Albin Michel.

The 2007 film based on Persepolis won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Satrapi was subsequently honored with the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 2024.

With her passing, we lose one of the most influential authors of recent decades and a lucid and necessary voice in defense of rights and democracy.
