The exhibition “The Best of the Golden Age,” which will be held during 44 Comic Barcelona, offers a visual journey through notable literary works of the Spanish Golden Age using the language of comics. This brilliant period in Spanish culture gave rise to figures such as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Velázquez, and El Greco, as well as universal archetypes like the picaro, Don Juan, and the hidalgo.
Despite their importance, many of these works are not well known to the public, which often perceives them as distant or difficult. This exhibition aims to overcome this barrier by bringing these creations closer to new generations in an entertaining, accessible, and engaging way using comics as a gateway.
Artist Ken Niimura has created illustrations inspired by pivotal works from this period. Philologist Oriol Corcoll provides informative explanations that contextualize and enrich each piece. Additionally, the exhibition draws parallels between these classic works and contemporary creations, demonstrating how the narrative and thematic legacy of the Golden Age lives on in today's imagination.
The Directorate General for Books, Comics, and Reading organized this exhibition, which may be temporarily loaned to institutions, nonprofit associations, and other entities. For more information, please email pepa.gutierrez@cultura.gob.es.
