TOMÁS HIJO

Tomás Hijo entered the world of engraving driven by the desire to use a technique that could allow him to make illustrations that seem to be made "inside" the fantasy worlds they represent. He chose linoleum engraving to convey this idea to reality because of the great creative versatility this technique allows while maintaining certain characteristics of ancient imagery; mainly influenced by Eastern European engravers.

Tomás Hijo has amalgamated the aesthetics of medieval engraving with a modern drawing style inspired by comics, animation and contemporary fantasy illustration. Guillermo del Toro, with whom Hijo has collaborated in the Tarot del Toro and in the feature film Nightmare Alley, has recognized this hybridization: “Tomás Hijo is, in my estimation, one of the great modern engravers. His work is vital, modern, but stepped in a grand tradition”.

Within Tomás Hijo's graphic work, his approaches to the work of Tolkien (with original graphic works and a tarot deck published in several countries) and of H.P. Lovecraft (also with graphic works and illustrated editions of his novels) stand out.

Other highlights of his careers are the already mentioned collaborations with Guillermo del Toro and other graphic creations related to video games (Bethesda, Valve) and fictional universes such as Stranger Things, Nightmare Alley, Labyrinth or Dark Crystal.
