Stan Sakai (Prefecture of Kioto, Japan. 1953)

Stan Sakai was born in Kioto, Japan, but he grew up in Hawaii and now lives in California. He graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii and finished his studies in the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

His great creation Usagi Yojimbo appeared in a comic for the first time in 1984. Since then, Usagi has been seen on television as a guest of the Ninja Turtles, and in games and clothes that have been made featuring him, and he has starred in a series of book collections. In 1991 he created Space Usagi about the adventures of a descendant of the original Usagi who presented the samurais in a futuristic scenario.

Sakai is also an award-winning letterer thanks to his work on Groo, by Sergio Aragonés, the Sunday pages with Spider Man and with Usagi Yojimbo. He is without doubt a highly regarded author: he has received a Parent's Choice prize, an Inkpot prize, an American Library Association prize, a Harvey prize, four Haxtur prizes in Spain, and several Eisner awards. In 2003, he received the prestigious National Cartoonists Society Comic Book Division Award, and in 2011 Sakai received the Cultural Ambassador award from the Japanese American National Museum.
